Archaeobotanical data as a tool for understanding history of synanthropic vegetation - a methodological study focused on traits of plants
Mrkvičková, Kateřina ; Pokorná, Adéla (advisor) ; Látková, Michaela (referee)
Archaeobotanical data are often a mixture of material of different origins. The formation process of archaeobotanical records can often be different. Hence it is important to understand the structure of these fossil records before the data are used for various reconstructions and interpretations. The aim of my diploma thesis is to identify the taphonomic causes of differences between synanthropic species from different archaeological sites using plant traits. The greatest differences between sets of species in archaeobotanical situations are due to the way of preservation, ie. between charred and non-charred (waterlogged) macro-remains. My diploma thesis is based on data from the Archaeobotanical database of the Czech Republic. I focused on the Middle Ages, which is the best period in terms of the number of species and the number of sites. Using multidimensional analyses, I examined the structure of archaeobotanical data and then selected a relevant dataset to examine the differences in species composition between different types of conservation. After that I correlated the results with the species traits. I found that the structure of archaeobotanical data is very heterogeneous. In each of the two types of conservation, different species are preserved. These species are characterized by a...
Formal and spatial properties of pottery findings from the archaeological research in Hvožďany (Tábor district) from 2009.
SOCHOR, Tomáš
Annotation The aim of this bachelor thesis is to process the archaeological material from the archaeological site in Hvozdany. All the material is processed in a database which is a part of the attachment. This thesis compares the results of my database with the results of the plant macroremains analysis and charcoal analysis. The descriptive system from O. Chvojka was used for the analysis of ceramic fragments.
Hunter-gatherer archaeobotany: Central European Mesolithic
PTÁKOVÁ, Michaela
The present work attempts to provide understanding of the issue of Mesolithic archaeobotany, especially in terms of plant use, woodland clearance, and discussion concerning Mesolithic agriculture. Special attention is also paid to taxa occurring within archaeological context at European Mesolithic sites and some methodological implications. Also, specific patterns in food preparation and consumption are considered, particularly with emphasis on certain archaeological features. The thesis also brings new original data from the Czech Republic. In this regard, assemblage from Dvojitá Brána u Rohlin has provided hints towards the study of the Neolithisation process in the Czech Republic, whereas case study from the Schwarzenberg Lake has brought considerable focus on the issue of depositional/postdepositional processes, especially when dealing with shallow sandy sediments. The thesis also strongly reflects the growing need for interdisciplinary work to address issues related to Mesolithic hunter-gatherers.
